The visa, do i need it?

On the 24th of June 2022, the National assembly passed the Tourism Levy Bill of 2022. With this new act, the sustainable development fee (SDF) of 65 USD per night has now been increased to 200 USD per night. Along with the increase in the SDF the minimum daily package rate (MDPR) has been removed as well.

Previously visitors to Bhutan were required to pay MDPR of 250 USD per person per night, out of which 65 USD went to the government as the SDF. With the new bill being passed, tourists visiting Bhutan will have to pay 200 USD per person per night plus one time visa fee of USD 40 per person valid for 90 days. Besides, tourists are required to to pay separately for accommodation, meals, transport, and guides.

How much do I pay for my Bhutan visa?

International tourist visas a cost of USD $40 applies. This can be paid in advance to you tour operator or travel agent. For Indian passport (or VIC) holders, Bangladeshi nationals and persons from the Maldives there is no cost incurred. 

How would I enter Bhutan?

There are a number of airports where you can fly into Bhutan from (Bangkok,Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Bodh Gaya, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Guwahati, Singapore and Mumbai.). At present two carriers operate to Bhutan, Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Also, there are three land border crossings which you can travel into the kingdom overland. All crossings are along the Indian border only – Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar. All travel arrangements to Bhutan must be made through a local tour operator. A list of tour companies operating in Bhutan is available on this website. Your selected tour operator will make all the necessary arrangements. 

Do I have to pay the payment in advance for my trip to Bhutan?

Well, you will send your payment only after you finalize your travel itinerary, choice of hotel and all other necessary clarifications done prior. You will send it directly to tour operators bank account created here in Bhutan by the Government. The account however is not accessible to tour operator directly. The payment only comes to your tour operator through Bhutan Tourism Council once your Bhutan tour is complete.

Can I book a direct flight from my country to Bhutan?

Oh no! No foreign planes risk landing in Bhutan. And the topographical monopoly of Bhutanese skies is relished by Druk-Air -Bhutan’s only national airline and lately Tashi Air- the lone private carrier. Landing or taking off at our airport is exclusively managed by our home-grown pilots owing to several cliffs surrounding the port at Paro which is situated at a height of 2,225 meters above sea level and is surrounded by mountains as high as 4,876 meters. Bhutan is a mountainous country and therefore airport at our choice of place is physically not possible. Of course, we have domestic airport in eastern Bhutan, central Bhutan, and in southern Bhutan.

Wait again. It is amazing! To add on to your heartbeats, Ugyen Dema, 33-year-old Bhutanese; the first female captain is now independently roaring our air-bird in this rocky terrain since November, 2018.  

Where do I board the Bhutanese plane?

You can board these planes either at Bangkok, Delhi, Mumbai, Kathmandu, Bagdogra, Dhaka or Singapore, purely at your convenience

When is the ideal time to visit Bhutan?

November to February is usually cold with snowfall in January sometimes. March to October is warm.

How about my currency in Bhutan?

You can exchange your currency at different Banks in Bhutan, not necessarily at the airport, and it doesn’t take much time. Ngultrum (Nu) is the Bhutanese currency. The exchange rate of 1 USD against Nu is around 81 at the moment.

How different is the food in Bhutan?

Almost every dish has Chillis. Rice is the main component of most Bhutanese meals. In a nutshell, Spiciness (hot) is the most distinctive characteristic of Bhutanese cuisine.

In case if I have to cancel my trip at last moment, can I?
